What are trigger points?
Trigger points are hypersensitive spots within a muscle that can cause localized pain and stiffness, as well as referred pain in other parts of the body. They are formed by microtraumas, muscle overload, stress, or repetitive movements.
How to recognize a trigger point?
Pain to pressure: When pressure is applied to the trigger point, intense, localized pain is felt.
Referred pain: Pain can radiate to other parts of the body, such as the arm, leg, or head.
Limited range of motion: The affected muscle may have less strength and flexibility.
Nodules: In some cases, small nodules or "balls" can be palpated in the muscle.
How to address trigger points?
There are different techniques to treat trigger points, such as:
Dry needling: A physical therapist inserts a thin needle into the trigger point to release muscle tension.
Self-treatment techniques: You can use a tennis ball, a foam roller, or your own fingers to apply pressure to trigger points.
Benefits of healing trigger points:
Pain reduction: Trigger point treatment can significantly relieve local and referred pain.
Improved mobility: By releasing muscle tension, flexibility and range of motion are improved.
Injury prevention: Eliminating trigger points can help prevent future injuries.
Improved overall well-being: Reducing pain and stress can improve your mood and quality of life.
